Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Length for You

Necklace length is one of the most overlooked decisions in jewellery — and one of the most impactful. The same pendant can look completely different on a 16" chain versus an 18" one. The same layered stack works perfectly at some lengths and falls flat at others.

This guide covers every standard necklace length, where each one sits, which necklines and styles it works best with, and how to choose if you're buying for layering.

Standard Necklace Lengths: A Quick Reference

UK necklace lengths are measured in inches (the industry standard). Here's what each common length means in practice:

12" — Choker (very close to neck)

Sits extremely high on the neck, just above the collarbone. Very tight and fashion-forward. Works best on shorter necks where it creates definition, or as a statement piece with plunging necklines. Not practical as an everyday length for most people.

14" — Choker / high collar

Sits at the collarbone or just above it. The most popular length for choker-style pieces. Looks particularly good on longer, slender necks. Works well under crew necks and boat necks to create a layered look without the necklace disappearing inside the clothing.

16" — Princess length (the most popular everyday length)

Sits just below the collarbone — the "sweet spot" for most people. This is the most flattering and versatile length for pendants, delicate chains, and statement pieces. It works with virtually every neckline: V-neck, scoop, crew, boat neck, off-shoulder.

If you're buying a necklace and aren't sure what length to choose, 16" is almost always the right call. Most of BinkyBelle's dainty necklaces and pendants come standard at this length.

18" — Matinee / standard chain

Sits a few inches below the collarbone — on most people, this sits between the collarbone and the bust. A longer, more relaxed feel than 16". Great for larger pendants that look better with more space, and ideal for layering as the second or third layer in a stack. Also works well for taller people where 16" might sit awkwardly high.

20" — Longer matinee

Sits near the top of the bust. A versatile length for both casual wear and layering. Often the longest length in a layered stack — works particularly well with chunky chains, statement pendants, or coin necklaces where the pendant benefits from sitting lower.

22"–24" — Opera length

Sits mid-bust to just below the bust. A more dramatic, statement length. Works beautifully with V-necks and open necklines. Less practical for everyday wear but visually impactful. Often used for longer pendant necklaces or body chains.

28"–36" — Rope length

Long enough to be doubled, knotted, or worn as a lariat. More of a fashion statement than a standard necklace. Less common in everyday wear but has a strong style impact with simple, minimal outfits.

Necklace Length by Body Type

General guidance — the most flattering lengths vary slightly depending on proportions:

Shorter or petite frames

Shorter lengths (14"–16") sit naturally at or above the collarbone and tend to look more proportional. Very long necklaces (22"+) can overwhelm a smaller frame. For layering, keep the length difference between layers smaller — 2"–3" apart rather than 4"–6".

Average / medium frames

16" and 18" are both flattering. The choice comes down to neckline and personal preference. 16" works well for most pendants; 18" gives a slightly more relaxed look.

Taller or longer-torso frames

Longer lengths work better proportionally. A 16" chain can look too short on a very tall frame — 18"–20" tends to sit better. Longer pendants and layered stacks work particularly well because there's more torso space to fill.

Necklace Length by Neckline

Matching your necklace length to your neckline makes a significant difference to how the overall look comes together:

V-neck

Choose a pendant that follows the V shape — so the tip of the pendant sits at or slightly above the lowest point of the V. A 16"–18" necklace with a small pendant typically works well. Avoid very short chokers with deep V-necks.

Crew neck / round neck

A 14"–16" necklace that sits just above the neckline, or a longer 18"–20" pendant that hangs below it. Both work. A necklace that disappears inside a crew neck looks odd, so either go shorter than the neckline or clearly longer.

Scoop neck

Similar to crew neck. A 16" pendant that mirrors the curve of the neckline works beautifully. Multiple layered lengths also work well with the open neckline.

Off-shoulder / bardot

The neckline is very open, so shorter lengths like 14"–16" work well to fill the space at the collarbone. Longer pieces can look like they're just falling away from the neckline.

High neck / polo / turtle neck

Only longer lengths work — 20"+ so the necklace hangs visibly below the neckline. Very short lengths are completely hidden. A single longer pendant or bold chain is often better than delicate layered pieces with a high neck.

Strapless / sweetheart

Any length works well because the neckline is low and open. A 16" pendant sitting at the collarbone creates a focal point; layered lengths of 14"–18" also look excellent.

How to Choose Necklace Lengths for Layering

Layering necklaces is about creating clear visual separation between each piece — if two necklaces are too close in length they'll tangle and look like a mess rather than an intentional stack.

The spacing rule

Leave at least 2" between each layer. For a cleaner, more intentional look, 3"–4" between layers works better. A common layered stack:

  • Layer 1: 14" or 16" (sits at collarbone)
  • Layer 2: 18" (sits a couple of inches lower)
  • Layer 3: 20" or 22" (sits lower still)

Mix lengths, not just styles

The most common layering mistake is choosing pieces of similar length and wondering why they tangle. The length difference is what creates the layered effect — different pendants at the same length will just compete.

Match the chain weights

Very delicate chains get lost next to heavier ones. Try to keep similar weight chains together, or make the heaviest chain the longest layer so it anchors the look.

Measuring Yourself

The easiest way to check what length will work for you: use a tape measure or a piece of string held at the back of your neck, bring it round to the front, and see where different lengths fall on your body. Do this in the mirror in front of your wardrobe so you can hold different tops up to see how lengths interact with different necklines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular necklace length?

16" is the most widely worn length — it sits just below the collarbone and works with almost every neckline and outfit. 18" is a close second, particularly for pendants and layering.

What length necklace should I buy if I don't know my size?

16" is the safest default for most people. It's flattering on most body types, works with most necklines, and is the right length for most pendants. If you're taller or prefer a more relaxed look, go for 18".

Can I get necklaces in different lengths?

Most BinkyBelle necklaces are available in standard lengths — check individual product listings for available options. Many chains also come with extender links, giving you a 2"–3" adjustable range. Browse our necklace collection here → [link to /collections/necklaces]

What's the right length for a pendant necklace?

Depends on the pendant size and your neckline. For a small, delicate pendant, 16" sits beautifully. For a larger or heavier pendant, 18"–20" gives it more room to sit naturally without feeling crowded at the collarbone.
